Wed, 06 Jul 2011 23:41:48 -0700 Yes, This Is Still Happening http://www.thewalk2010.com/yes-this-is-still-happening http://www.thewalk2010.com/yes-this-is-still-happening

It's been quite a while since I have written here. I can't say that the whole time I've been extraordinarily busy. I haven't until recently. In April I started working at Saint Joseph's again, my old job before I left for my trip. All the old faces and a few new ones. It feels great to be back here and working. I have a lot of plans in the next several years and SJU definitely fits into them.

I've also acquired a new camera, a Canon 5d Mark ii. I love it. The feeling of having a camera again has lifted so much weight off my shoulders. Being able to have that outlet again is such a necessity in my life. I don't know how I was dealing without it for so long.

The documentary is still going. It's very slow at this point, but the updates I have in the next few months will be big. I'm still working on the soundtrack here and there, as well as getting down on paper all my thoughts about experiences that weren't on the site. I expect this whole project to be over in November of 2013. My plan is to have a live performance, a 30-40 minute documentary, and  an interactive journal to tie everything together. It so much planning I don't want to think about it. I just have to break it up into pieces and tackle them one at a time. It will get done though, it has to.

Until then, I post things regularly on my other site, www.gidfoto.com, a small blog dedicated to my photos and little videos here and there.

I'm back in Philadelphia now, the Italian Market area. Being back in the city and my own place again makes me feel a lot stronger since the limbo I've had without a place for so long, about 20 months. Thanks again for everyone that continues to check this site out. I still can't believe everyone that has read it, thank you again so much! Take care.

Mon, 31 Jan 2011 08:55:06 -0800 Writing writing writing http://www.thewalk2010.com/writing-writing-writing http://www.thewalk2010.com/writing-writing-writing In the mist of all this thinking and loss of sleep over this project I've started writing. God help us all, I'm terrible. Philly has been hit with one of the worst snow totals and horrible weather ever this winter. In the coming weeks I'll be going to Tampa, into some sunshine and out of the snow. I'll have a chance to write, work, and catch up with old friends, as well as get in shape for the summer ahead. Thanks again to everyone that still takes the time to look every once in a while! Here's a piece from what I've been scribbling down.

"Even after what little time I spent walking and pretending like I was about to conquer the world all I had in my head were romantic montages of me with a big fucking smile crossing the US. In reality, my whole life is one big romantic fucking montage never thinking clearly and having grandiose visions of my wildest dreams coming true. I pictured myself just like Frank Moody, a fictional sex driven drunk played by a real sex driven drunk whose only way out is to play a fictional sex driven drunk on cable. I see the start and finish of everything I want to accomplish and never see the middle, the actual journey. No one thought I would actually start this, let alone finish, not even me. I realistically envisioned me giving it the old college try, which meant me not reading, missing class, and having my college sweetheart bang everyone around me but me. Everything is for the best though, she was a terrible lay."

Thanks and take care!

Tune of the Day: Jukebox The Ghost -Schizoprena

How would you think of the States after seeing all cultures in between the coasts? How you view the world after seeing all of the cultures you've never seen? What sort of connections could you make with yourself and someone half across the globe? I aim to find out.

There have been many ideas and thoughts running through my mind since I've been back. In many ways Philly is just as I left it. In other ways I feel more disconnected and rejected as ever. After thinking over the things I expierenced on my trip I still want to find out more about people, their habits, traditions, and what ties all of us as a species together. What ties people in each of their countries together?

Lots of thoughts, lots of planning, very motivated. Take Care

4Tldemo3 Jonny Listen on Posterous

Hello to you all! It's been a few months since I've been back from my trip. I've been able to reconnect with old friends and some of the people that I met and traveled with on my trip. Some of the things that I was used to and remembered fondly don't seem the same. Some of the things feel exactly like I never left. It's a bit discomforting to tell you the truth. I haven't come back this totally different person. I haven't any great revelations to share with anyone. I just have a hand full of crazy stories and the bug to get out there and do it again! That won't be happening anytime soon though.

Despite the loss of footage I'm still going through with this documentary. Right now, a few close friends and I have begun working on the sound, slowly. I am patiently hacking away at all the ideas that I had for this project. First is the sound. We are getting a few ideas down and seeing where they go. I plan to be working on this for the next six months. Then will come some of the editing. I still have yet to look at any of the footage. It has been very hard but I want to get myself away from the visual part of the project until I see it with "fresh eyes" as a friend of mine would say.

Here is a quick snipet Jonny B and I wrote up. I will be dropping small short little piece here and there. Thanks again, take care.

Clip of the Day: Hook - The Boo Box

Location: San Francisco, California

Date: August 10th, 2010

Well here it is, San Francisco, you son of a bitch! I got here, barely, but I got here. It was the most mentally taxing day on this whole trip. After being so far from my goal this entire trip, being so close to it was near agony! I just wanted to be there already!

In Jenner I had my first legit fall. Of course this happens on my last day. Of course this screws up my knee. Of course I had to push it. All I could think of are blue skies going over the golden gate. All I got were ridiculous grades and curves in the road that got me sea sick to a point.

About 35 miles away my knee gave out. It just clicks a lot and hurts. I got a ride for 15 miles from a women and her daughter in a Prius.

The last 15 or so miles were head winds, heavy mist, fog, and cold cold temps. They are messing around with the hills here. The biking signs to the Golden Gate are retardo. Just riding over that massive iconic thing was amazing and scary. The wind blows you back and forth so hard you constantly feel like you'll fly into the bay or into traffic.

My old friend from Tampa, Samantha and her boyfriend Jeff picked me up. They got me food and a few beers, the exact perfect ending I dreamt of no lie.

So I got across the country. I almost tore my achilles, hung out with a transgendered farmer, got flipped in a car, road across the most beautiful landscapes, met a ninth arch and rode down fog for 850 miles, now what? I will be updating for a few more days while in am here and when I get back to Philly. Then I will sporadically updating to keep you guys up on the progress of the documentary and whatnot.  Take care

Clip of the Day: Willy Wonka - Tunnel Vision

Location: Woodside State Park, California

Date: August 9th, 2010

Walking up to a thick, dense fog I went to bed. Waking up to thick, misty fog again, I get up and realize its not going away. I said adios to Dave and started out with 100 feet of vision before the fog rolled blocked my view. It was a stupid how easily any car could have side swiped me.

The sun came out and the sea stacks overtook my view for the rest of the day. I ran into another cyclist, Jeff, a production designer, who was riding from Vancover to LA to visit with his agent. A sort of funny look I can imagine when his agent hears "Ill be down in three weeks, I'm taking my bike."

The day just got cloudy and foggy again, weird! Its been this mist this whole coast, and way more curves and grades than I was expecting. But that's how it going to be I guess, hardest before the end. Take care

Song of the Day: Weezer - My Name Is Jonus

Location: Westport, California

Date: August 8th, 2010

The last big hill was today. I didn't think I'd be doing much, I just wasn't feeling it today. After a long second breakfast, I met Dave, another cyclist doing a tour from Seattle area to LA.

After only a few minutes of riding we passed by a glorious water hole. We climbed down these steep rocks. Dave flew down the hill, I was slow and careful. By the time I got to eyesight of the waterhole, I saw Dave take off his riding pants. I just thought "Alright, its going THIS direction." The guy wasn't weird, just a super free spirit, like a kid. The water was magical, my pants were on though haha. I jumped from a ten foot cliff, loved it.

Later that day we tackled the last big climb before San Fran. The curves were so exagerated. In and out, around, hugging all the sides of the mountain. At the end of it was a campground on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Sunset? Yes please! Take care.

Song of the Day: Get Up Kids - Ten Minutes

Location: Avenue of the Giants, California

Date: August 7th, 2010

We got up and out of Arcata. Said goodbye to Brendan and Kat and started towards the Redwoods.

The Avenue of the Giants was today. Just another scenic tour through these glorious trees is something that makes you feel five all over again. They are so big it's hard to believe.

We went through a town called Rio Dell which was having their annual Wild Wood Festival filled with music, food, and lawn mower racing! These beast can haul up to 50 MPH and make you pee your pants laughing. As we were watching the festivities in awe Chase's tire spontaneously flattened. Out of nowhere it just lets out all its air. Hilarious and tragic.

Camping next to the redwoods was so fun. It was Smokey the Bears birthday! Everyone showed up for cake but Smokey! I guess he was already wasted from partying at all the other sites. Tomorrow is Fort Bragg hopefully. I'm only a few days away from San Fran! Can't wait! Take care.

Song of the Day: The Beatles - Let It Be

Location: Arcata, California

Date: August 6th, 2010

Today was another random day. I had planned to hit Weott and bike 100 miles. Instead I only hit 45.

I said adios to the crew of eight in the morning and made my way slowly up the hills. There was so much traffic and fog. That mixed with relatively no shoulder made for a shitty morning. I passed a women named Sage, "Like the herb" she says.

She is biking from north of Seattle to Santa Cruz, for no other reason than to travel. Catch is, she's only 17. I asked if she was running away from something that happened to her at home. An obvious question but something that must be asked. What I've found was a life of hard times taken so well on the surface and looking at the bright side of everything and every situation. I guess to survive through life and come out alive you have to look at things like that.

Moving from place to place, from tents to trailers, to houses with unfinished walls and no running water, Sage had to roll with whatever came her way. The only slip that I saw was when she mentioned she wishes someone would just take care of her.

A simple crack into someones life can lead to a cave of insight into how someone feels. Even though she's doing this incredible thing, learning so much, and becoming such a stronger and independant person, she's still young and deserves what every other kid does, love and peace.

I met up with Eric and Chase later on. We rode to Arcata and stayed with two people that hosted us, Brendan and Kathy. They were so nice and gracious, showing us the town and more importantly the ice cream store. Tomorrow is Avenue of the Giants, I cant wait! Take care

Song of the Day: Rx Bandits - Never Slept So Soundly

Location: Orick, California

Date: August 5th, 2010

One of the most beautiful and hilarious days of the trip with a start that couldn't have been any shittier. Waking up in the rain next to the cold wind of the ocean is not a good morning. The only good thing were all the otters swimming around.

We stopped in Crescent City for food and I went to get my chain looked at by the only bike shop in town. Tom, the owner, made the thing run like new for zero dollars. Thanks man!

I started my climb up the hill, a 800 foot climb, child's play at this point, and started seeing the giant redwoods. Holy shit what a gorgeous site! These things make you feel like you're hanging with the Ewoks having a wonderful time.

At the bottom of the hill was a tourist trap, Mystery in the Trees. We would have kept on going if it wasn't for Paul Bunyon, the legandary lumber mountain man! The dude was 49 feet high and he fucking talks to you. Not just random yellow but full on conversations with everyone passing through. Paul and I talked in length, and 3 minutes, about my trip and what I was doing. Then he gave me a big wave with his hand and went on to the next one. As we were leaving he saw Chase's bike and said "Does that bike say Giant on the side of it?!" Hilarious!

We made it through some more of the redwoods and met up with another group. A couple from Maine with their friend and another gentlemen riding for a cause. Globewalk.org, check it out.

I'm with a crew I have randomly met 8 deep. Not sure how all this happened but it did. Now I'm in a campsite in the middle of these gorgeous trees and wondering how I got here? Take care.

Song of the Day: Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication

Location: Salmon Lake, California

Date: August 4th, 2010

California damnit! I'm here! You're welcome!

Today's ride was cold but beautiful down the coast. I met two other riders yesterday that I'm continuing to ride with today. Chase and Eric, twin brothers, are riding down the coast for the next few weeks in between semesters. Both qualified nerds, in a good way, Chase and I had some problems. His derailer was a bit off and my chain was stiff as could be.

The fog came in and we passed the boarder into Cali! The last state in my journey, camera or no camera this is still a great day. It is finally starting to kick in that I'm actually here, that I actually am almost done. I still think that I'm at the base of the Big Horns and I still have forever to go. However, I only have a few hundred miles left and its over. Take care.
